UK Heatwave: Day 2

With what we learned in terms of keeping our house, ourselves, and our cats cool during the first day of the heatwave, I feel like today went pretty well! I had a difficult time getting to sleep last night because our room felt so hot and stuffy even though the ceiling fan was on full and the windows were open. I ended up waking up after three hours and wandering downstairs to keep the cats entertained. The temperature in the early morning was nice and cool so I was able to open the catio and then grabbed a tall glass of ice water and went back upstairs to curl up around an icepack. Luckily I was able to get some sleep and I made up for it in the morning by sleeping in a bit later. I was surprised I didn’t feel more hot until around 11AM when Alex brought the hygrometer into the bedroom. I saw it was 29C (the living room was around 26C at the time!) and decided it was time to take a tepid shower.

So today was a bit more of the same as yesterday: fans placed in the dining room and living room, as well as two up on the landing and the ceiling fan on full. Curtains remained closed and we made sure to bring the cats inside between 10AM and 4PM when it was hottest out. The cats allowed me to pet them with wet hands and I think that helped cool them down a bit, too. At one point after Margot dashed into the hot bedroom when I went to check the temperature, we realised that he didn’t really have a favourite spot to sleep downstairs! Alex lured him out with treats and we set him up in a basket with a damp tea towel on top to keep him cool. He ended up napping there for a while quite happily.

I feel like yesterday we didn’t really utilise ice in our drinks so I made sure to have a bunch of ice every time I got a glass of water. The heat started to die down in the evening and then it rained for a bit which I’m very glad about because it certainly brought the temp down from 38C!

Dance rehearsal was moved to Thursday instead of today so that was a nice surprise! I was a little worried that I would be both exhausted and overheated but my lack of sleep ended up being a non-issue. Tomorrow looks like it’ll be a fair bit cooler so I’m hoping to spend some time on work as well as tending to the garden because I’m sure the plants would benefit from a thorough watering.
