I didn’t think I would miss shooting with my Nikon D7000 and 50mm lens as much as I did yesterday. The Olympus Pen Lite E-PL7 is a great little camera for many reasons, although it pales in comparison to an actual DSLR. I’ve had this camera for about a year now and I bought it so I could easily vlog on the go. Even though I haven’t used it as much as my Nikon, it’s still a good piece of technology to have around. Last summer my husband and I went to Italy on our honeymoon and I brought the Olympus with me so I wouldn’t have to lug around a heavy DSLR the whole trip. It was great fun and I got a lot of good shots, but when I brought it with my to London yesterday I found it incredibly frustrating to use.
Maybe I’ve really spoilt myself from using my 50mm lens so much but I also missed the familiar feeling of pressing my cheek against the camera body to get a look through the viewfinder. I found myself disliking that anyone could see what I was taking a photo of and felt that it ruined a little bit of the surprise element. It’s a small thing, I suppose, but I think that next time I head out and intend on snapping pictures I will opt to bring my Nikon above all else. Also the quality is way better with a DSLR than a point and shoot. The depth of field I get with my 50mm trumps the Olympus’ 3.5-5.6 aperture of the 14-42mm lens.
Anyway, enough camera chat. Yesterday was a lot of fun! We went to Homeslice and ate far too much pizza (like seriously, way too much for our bodies to handle) and then met up with a friend for drinks before heading off to see Animal Collective. The gig was pretty good, although I do wish their set was more high energy because you could tell that just about everyone in the crowd wanted to dance. All in all, I think my husband’s birthday was a total success! It was a night I think we’ll both be laughing about for years to come.
So, without further a do, I’ve got a few photos from yesterday taken with the Olympus. I’ll let you decide whether or not they’re better than my usual Nikon photos.
