Many people know today as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, but I only know it as Mardi Gras: Fat Tuesday. Before you start painting a mental picture of me throwing beads and wearing crazy costumes in New Orleans, I’m not really a big fan of all that stuff. My favourite part of Mardi Gras has always been the king cake.
A ring of dough swirled with cinnamon, sugar, pecans, and raisins, drizzled with icing and dusted with purple, yellow, and green sugar. Hidden somewhere inside of this colourful and delicious confectionary masterpiece is a small plastic baby waiting to be found. If you get the baby, you have to bring next year’s king cake.
There are probably some other meanings or traditions surrounding the king cake and the hidden baby, but I’m more interested in the cake itself because it’s just such a funny little delight! Last year we wished we had one for Mardi Gras so this year we finally made one. It’s been so long since I last had king cake and Alex did an amazing job baking our first one. The flavour is really similar to a cinnamon roll, but it’s the presentation of the whole thing that really makes the king cake so grand. We used a simple recipe from AllRecipes and that seemed to do the trick just fine!
In other news, after we had three slices of king cake (yes, it’s that good) we got our emails confirming we’ll be able to join the presale for BTS tickets tomorrow evening!! So now it’s basically a free-for-all to see if we can get tickets to one of the tour dates. Alex is signed up to try for tickets for the 9th and I’m going to try for the 8th.
I really hope we’re able to get tickets! It’s crazy to think that by this time tomorrow we’ll know whether or not we have tickets. If we don’t get any tomorrow night, we may have another chance to get them on Thursday if we get in to the TicketMaster Verified Fan presale. Oof, this is such a crazy process! The tensions are very high. See you tomorrow!
