Minimal IKEA Side Table Upcycle

One of my favourite things to do is treasure hunt! Although, my definition of “treasure hunt” might be more of a modern interpretation considering the fact that it mainly revolves around thrifting. Either way, I’ve always loved finding unique and cool things at thrift stores (aka charity shops here in the UK).

A couple of months ago I came across a really cool side table from IKEA (RY, circa 1999) at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in town. It was only £10 but I decided I didn’t need it and someone else would probably want it more. So I walked away, a little disappointed that I hadn’t picked it up when I had the chance. I thought about the side table often, and then a few weeks later when I was browsing the charity shops in town I was shocked to see the side table I had left behind! I knew it was meant to be, so I snatched the little bugger up and took it home, intent on giving it a new lease on life.

Flash forward to today where I finally made good on my promise. I’d been meaning to buy some spray paint for this particular project and it took me a decent amount of time to finally decide to go for a pastel green colour over lilac or orange. The glass tabletop was fixed with a single nut to the silver metal arm that curved over the top and down the side, making it an easy removal for painting. I gave the metal bits a scrub with some sugar soap and then sprayed the whole thing down with the green spray paint. It only took about an hour to coat the whole thing, turning the piece over half way through to spray it from every angle. Once the paint was touch dry I gave the glass table top a clean and put it all together.

I’m so pleased with the finished result! It’ll be a really great side table to bring out into the catio once the weather heats up a bit, but for now it’s got a great spot in the entryway to collect all of the random bits and bobs we bring home. And to think I nearly let this little side table get away!
